Researchers at the University of Minnesota, led by Dr. Mark Herzberg, recently reported that the most common strain of bacteria in dental plaque could cause blood clots that can induce a heart attack when they escape into the blood stream. This explains the result of previous studies, which found that heart disease is almost twice as high in people with periodontal or gum disease.
